El inicio de la temporada de alfombras rojas fue... decente, por decir lo menos. Nuestras actrices favoritas estuvieron un poco decepcionantes, pero al mismo tiempo nos sorprendieron algunas que no teníamos en nuestro radar, y hubo apariciones de esas bellezas de siempre que simplemente se ven perfectas. En general, fue una combinación soportable y una mezcla interesante.

Como siempre, por supuesto, hubo muchas tendencias. El rosa y los tonos piel estuvieron a la orden del día junto con encajes y las estrellas de la noche, las mangas voluminosas. A diferencia de las mangas globo que se vieron en  2015 con los hombros descubiertos (hola, Johanna Ortiz) estas mangas recuerdan un poco a los vestidos victorianos en los que las mangas globo partían desde los hombros creando una silueta bastante más grande de la que estamos acostumbradas a ver. Hubo, como siempre, quienes las llevaron bien y otras que fallaron miserablemente. ¡Comencemos!

Mejor vestidas

Joey King en Iris van Herpen Alta Costura




No todos los días se ve un Iris en la alfombra sencillamente porque los diseños de la holandesa no son para todo el mundo. No siguen las siluetas apretadas que les gustan a la mayoría, y son muy difíciles de llevar porque cada uno sigue un concepto diferente y exige compromiso. Solo por eso, nos encanta que Joey King haya elegido una pieza de la colección Hypnosis (Haute Couture 2020) para su primer look de alfombra roja del año. Con eso ya tenía la mitad asegurada, y terminó de ganar dejando que el vestido brillara y usando maquillaje y complementos sencillos. Espectacular.

La pieza original que la marca puso en su desfile es negra, lo cual nos dice mucho del papel de un color vibrante a la hora de resaltar un vestido (o enterizo en este caso). Además del color, que combina de forma perfecta con su cabello y su piel, el escote, el volumen de las mangas y hasta la joya que escogió son una sinfonía armoniosa de la que no cambiaríamos un detalle. Espectacular.

Phoebe Waller Bridge en Ralph & Russo




Los trajes dejaron de ser una apuesta original en la alfombra roja, así que ahora la tarea es cómo seguir haciéndolos vigentes, y Phoebe definitivamente lo logró, los detalles de tweed y brillo de la tela de este conjunto son magníficos, y las proporciones también, especialmente el entalle del pantalón, que es algo en lo que muchos sastres fallan. No amamos el cabello, pero lo perdonamos.

Nada puede ser más acertado que arriesgarse con el color y Jodie Comer lo logró con toda. El verde del vestido, el amarillo del clutch con plumas y el fucsia de los zapatos combinan perfectamente y no chocan debido a sus proporciones. Además, le apostó a una silueta no tradicional con un buen entalle, ganador por donde se vea.

Ana de Armas en Ralph & Russo 


Si hubiera una marca que hoy en día encarnara el hada madrina, sería sin duda Ralph & Russo, a quienes no les hemos contado una sola equivocación en la alfombra roja, y quienes fueron los responsables de hacer de Ana de Armas una tendencia en Twitter por lo fabulosa que se ve. Porque, ¿quién quiere un vestido de princesa tradicional cuando puedes cubrirlo todo en lentejuelas y además PONERLE BOLSILLOS? El maquillaje con labios rojos es un gran complemento y las joyas a tono funcionan tan bien, que le perdonamos el peinado de estúpida.

Otra lección sobre cómo hacer destacar un traje 'simple': con los detalles. El brillo resalta entre el look totalmente negro, y el entalle es maravilloso.

Renee Zellweger en Armani Prive


 Uno diría que es un vestido cualquiera, pero es que parece que lo hubieran hecho especialmente para ella y que la hubiera vestido un coro de pajaritos como a Blancanieves, el detalle diagonal de brillo lo hace interesante y la abertura es lo suficientemente alta como para ser sexy sin que creamos que le vamos a ver nada. La amamos.

Peor Vestidas

Fijo uno de los 'expertos' que estafan a la gente con su marca le dijo que ponerse esta cosa tan horrible por una orden cósmica para alinear sus chakras. No le encuentro otra explicación a ponerse  este pareo lleno de tul barato.

Ok, lo vamos a decir otra vez aunque nos caigan todas las piedras: esto es una empanada. El plisado es bonito, pero el detalle de pedrería se ve extremadamente barato, y la tira del centro es como el 'switch' del apartamento de Joey y Chandler en Friends: no pudimos encontrarle función alguna.

En Moda 2.0 vamos a crear el premio Salma Hayek a la Corroncha más Constante. Y sin duda la primera en recibirlo después de Salma (que siempre está tan mal que ya ni llega a la lista) tiene que ser Kerry. ¿A quién más se le puede ocurrir amarrarse unos nudos en vez de ponerse un top y pensar que eso se ve remotamente bien? 


JLo en Valentino 


En las temporadas de premios pasadas no le podíamos quitar los ojos de encima por su desnudez, y ahora que todos los ojos están sobre ella por su actuación se empeña en usar una silueta princesa que no le queda para nada bien. Este numerito que parece hecho con sobrados de papel de regalo tiene mucha tela y solo se le ve medianamente pasable a una modelo o a una persona muy alta a la que le funcionen estas proporciones. Y el peinado tieso noventero que le robó a su papel de Maid in Manhattan tiene que irse.

Sienna Miller en Gucci 


A Sienna le avisaron dos horas antes que tenía que ir a los Golden Globes así que cogió un vestido viejo de Gucci, le amarró un pedazo de satín para ajustar la cintura y se soltó el moño. Lista para salir.

Christina Applegate en Pamela Rolland

Las rayas de este vestido estaban hechas para crear una ilusión de alargue, pero resultaron haciéndola ver como un holograma mientras caminaba. Los reto a que lo vean por un segundo y no sientan que se mueva. Además, le queda ancho del busto y largo de las mangas.

Janina Gavankar en Georges Chakra

Frankendress edición Golden Globes 2020: mangas globo, encaje, pedrería, cola... le falta una antena parabólica y quedamos hechos.

Zoey es de esas humanas que puede ponerse cosas que a los demás se nos verían ridículas, como una combinación de estampado de lunares. Está en esta lista porque ese corte de pelo parece hecho por una cabra a mordiscos.


Nicole Kidman en Atelier Versace


El vestido no es nada del otro mundo, solo es un gran color. Pero es que parece que lo hubieran cosido sobre ella, no hay otra razón para que se vea tan perfectamente entallado. Es hermoso.

Así es como se usa una silueta princesa para no parecer quinceañera (aprende, JLo). Las mangas, el cinturón, el collar... todo es hermoso, pero ya estamos tan acostumbrados a verla tan regia que no pudimos ponerla en el tope... pero la amamos.

Otra perfecta que no pudimos poner arriba por falta de espacio... y tal vez de un poco de color en los labios. Pero me quiero ver así con el wet look.

A ver, para todos los Chanel regulares que ella se ha puesto, esto está muy bonito. Pero sigue siendo predecible y aburrido, sin más. Una mujer tan bella debería ser más arriesgada al vestir, y especialmente debe hacer algo con ese pelo tan meh.

Sofia Carson en Giambattista Vali 


Fiel a su estilo, se puso su mejor versión de vestido princesa, en un vestido fabuloso que combinó con joyas sencillamente espectaculares. PERO hay algo raro en ese peinado que no le va... y casi que se tira todo.

Saoirse Ronan en Celine

Lo bueno: es un vestido 'sencillo' que la hace ver muy bien sin tanta pretensión. Lo malo: definitivamente no es la mejor vestida de la noche. Lo sobrevalorado: Hedi Slimane. 

Shailenne Woodley en Balmain

Nos agrada ver que por fin encontró una silueta que le funciona y el vestido es muy bello, pero el detalle del cuello nos sobra, y mucho. En cuanto al maquillaje, nos gustaría verla intentar algo que no sea smokey eyes, como para variar.

La alfombra roja más esperada del año no nos defraudó. Las celebridades nos entregaron tantas propuestas de moda interesantes que nuestra lista de mejor vestidas era significativamente más larga que la de peores y menciones especiales, así que tuvimos que ser valientes y dejar a algunas por fuera para hacer este post más equilibrado.

If I'm being completely honest, out of all the red carpets the Grammy is my least favorire to talk about. First of all, because lately is just full of people I have no idea of (I'm old, I know), and second because it has become a parade of ridiculous costumes that, frankly, is annoying. However, we know you like it... and you know we would do anything for you, right?!

The good thing about the Grammys, though, is that like any other red carpet related to music, it allowd certain experimentation with the garments that would look terrible in other spaces say... the Academy Awards. In here, we want to see glitter, bold attitudes, over the top outfits... although everything within a frame that don't cross the line to crazy. Something that happens more often than not.

That is why this time, instead of talking about best and worst, we're going to divide them into three categories: the bold, the boring and the just... no.


The bold ladies of the carpet

Ok, we're not the biggest Cardi fans here, but we have to admit that the woman committed to the causa and gave good ictures and a subject to talk about... besides a good fashion moment. The three outfits are from the 1995 (red carpet and stage outfit) and 1997 (white look) Thierry Mugler Couture collection, a collaboration that took the experts by surprise, given the reputation of the house of not lending those garments for any celebrity. In fact, according to a press release quoted by Refinery29, "it is the second time in 25 years that the house presented several looks from the archives to dress a celebrity". However, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the 1995 Mugler collection inspired by the Venus of Boticelli, which is going to be the frame for major exhibitions like the one in the Museum of Fine Arts of Montreal. This tells us two things: first, that Cardi B's stylist (who according to Vogue is obssesed with Mugler and insisted many times in this collaboration) is not only great at his job but also that has a great eye for what works and can actually make headlines. Second, this moment is the reaffirmation of Cardi B's importance and the growth of her name. We can imagine there were not few celebrities asking for this... and not few that were denied of it. Pretty or not... that is not the point. The point is... this is a fashion statement.

Janelle Monae in Jean Paul Gaultier

After a couple of unfortunate and painful appereances, our queen is back and slaying in a look signed by Jean Paul Gaultier that only she can rock, just like everything she wears. This dress, being voluminous on the sleeves, has the perfect balance with the spiked shoulders, which gives it an elongation effect, something that makes her look powerful. The accesories are the icing on the cake, although we could live without the shoes: I would've prefered sandals and, especially, something that wasn't black. 
 
Tracee Ellis Ross in Ralph & Russo 

It's always great to see vivid colors on the red carpet and on the case of Tracee, it is fascinating to see her with that sartorial grace, that superstar allure that you rarely see these days, especially not at the Grammys. The snake embellishment elevates a 'simple' green suit to the category of 'a dress that you wear to the Grammys and make everyone else look dull'. 

Kylie Jenner in Balmain Haute Couture

Melissa talked to us last week about the return of Balmain to Haute Couture (and yelled at me for not remembering it) and mentioned how, facing a lack of strong inspiration, Olivier Rousteing played teh card of exageration in a collection that ended up being more costume than real fashion. However, that is exactly the reason why Balmain is perfect for the Grammys. And given Olivier's friendship with the Kardashians, it was only logical than one of them was wearing Balmain on the red carpet or, as Melissa said, that ugly Balmain. The sleeves-gloves don´t bother me, but what is really wrong is the fit of those pants, looking like a sack of potatoes. Better luck next time, Kylie.

JLo in Ralph & Russo

This is more complicated than ot looks like. For starters, we like the fact that JLo seems to have ran away from the femme-fatale-way-too-naked dresses and aligned with something more high fashion. On the other hand, this hat is a problem because it covers her face and it feels disconnected from the rest of the outfit. Would it have had the same impact without? We'll never know, but we would've liked seen it.


Katy Perry in Balmain

Another one of the Balmain ladies (someone is pushing it huh?) and another one that looks like she is wearing at costume. The proportions of this dress (just like Kylie's) are strange and the bodice looks too tight, just about to pop something out. And also, can we talk about the lip fillers? Because things are getting out of control...

Camila Cabello in Armani Privé

A simple dress with touched of sparkle, a chill hairdo and a killer back, everything that makes it go from normal to perfect for the Grammys. A detail: Camila used the same resource than Janelle, pointing the shape of the shoulders to create the illusion of a longer silhouette in a more demure, yet effective way.

Lady Gaga in Celine (yes, Celine with no accent) 

 I'm ready for the trolls, but this red carpet season seems like Gaga's creativity left the building. That is the only explanation for her use of the most overrated designer of our days for a dress that can't even look more interesting while being silver. Gaga, please, a bigger effort for ths Oscars.

Kelsea Ballerini in Jenny Packham

This happens when your friends say casual and you think you're secretly going to your bff's wedding. 


Dua Lipa en Versace

Wedding guest number 2. When the only thing Grammy-worthy on your outfit is your manicure, we have a problem. 

Nina Dobrev in Dior

Heidy left the countrysise and attended the Grammys... hair net included and all. 

Alicia Keys in Armani Privé

Anything that she wore on stage would've been a better idea. We love Armani Privé, but their aesthetics, like with this dress, is not really Grammy material. If we put it in the Golden Globes we've been saying something different, but here it only looks like it's missing something... if not a lot. The hair, however, is perfection. 

Rashida Jones in Ralph Lauren

The daughter of one the artists with more flow and favor in the workd picked up a Grammy for a documentary about him... looking like she rolled out of bed on a Sunday to make pancakes. This is wrong. 

Just... no.

Toni Braxton i3n Elie Madi

The naked see-through dress is so 2010, and if we add the unwanted nipple and the stupid hair, you have the perfect recipe for ugly. 


Ashanti in Afffair

Welcome to a new episode of Frankendress, starring Ashanti in an outfit that is half couch cushion and half duvet cover, finished with a make-up that looks like its missing a fake eyelash on a side. 

Jada Pinkett in Roberto Cavalli Couture 

As someone who has grown up looking at feathered dresses, I can say that this is, by far, saddest feather train that I have seen. That, and the fact that it is attached to a bodysuit with glitter on the botton, makes it an unexcusable dress.

Miley Cyrus in Thierry Mugler

The fit of the torso is good... and that is it. The sleeves look like they're about to swallow her, and the length of the pants is wrong. We do like the hair and make up, but the rest is just no. 

Jeannie Mai in Balmain

Everyone has the right to show as many skin as they want, but this is just ugly. Besides, it looks like Jeanie got inspired by Meghan Markle, choosing the only dress in the Balmain collection that wrinkles and guides our eyes to look the few things that she actually covered. 

And because we know everyone is going to talk about it... we will do it, too. We're going to talk about Andrea Echeverri.



Those who are familiar with Aterciopelados know that Andrea Echeverri is known for her music and her eccentric outfits, she even has made appereances with pieces inspired in indigenous work, but she always finds the perfect idea to stand out. And of course, this time was no different. There were very few chances that Andrea would make a difference on the red carpet, unless it was something very particular. And what can it be more particular than a gramophone? The outfit is a design by Paula Pérez. the artist that has worked with Aterciopelados and was simply the perfect costume. Ugly? Probably. But it made viral content for a band that didn't really have much chance to shine. Andrea became a meme, and that is big these days.

This year's red carpet season started very early, and it was the first one of a month in which we are going to have several award ceremonies until late February with the Academy Awards, and we will also include our Haute Couture review and some other things that we have yet to write for you (all along with the second submission of our thesis, God help us!) and of course we hope you like them!

Although if we think about this particular start... is not like we have high hopes. Unlike other years, 2019 was not a ceremony that took our breaths away whatsoever, for good or for bad. This year, personal styles made a comeback after a 2018 red carpet colored in black as the result of the #TimesUp movement that fights for equality for women in Hollywood, but that doesn´t mean there were no statements through the clothes displayed in the red carpet, especially the white celebrating the 100th anniversary of the women's suffragist movement, with choices that were a total hit and some others that just let us with a bunch of questions...

Best Dressed

Sofia Carson in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture

It is very pleasant to see young actresses committing to a certain look and evolve it and sharpen it over time. With Sofia Carson is something I like to call 'modern princess': a bit of Disney kid, sweet and elegant, that starts getting classier and classier with high fashion and an edge that this Gianbattista Valli translates perfectly. We like all of it: color, silhouette and even the tulle detail of the bodice, along with the most perfect red lips that we have seen in a while.

Dakota Fanning in Armani Privé

Speaking of modern princesses... here's Dakota Fanning showing everyone how it's done with this Armani Prive that looks like it was sawn all over her. It's been a while since we saw such a perfect fit. Besides, the color is perfect for her skin tone and the overall look is so well put together that we will pretend we didn't see the hair part down the middle...

Charlize Theron in Dior Couture 

If you can expect one thing from Charlize Theron is absolute perfection, and we're glad to report that she fulfilled our expectations. From head to toe (see, there's life beyond the hair parted down the middle) this look is perfection. The contrast between black and white is always a winner and the cut out at front with a high neck is a great balance. We also love the fact that she decided to wear rings and bracelets and leave the bow shine with simple earrings.

Julia Roberts in Stella McCartney 

Ok,kill me if you want, but this one is actually Melissa's decision. She loved it beyond words, to the point of saying this is one of Julia Roberts' personal bests. Me, on the other hand... I see it and I think is edgy, I always love to see pants on the red carpet, but I don't think nude was the best choice for this particular outfit. Just imagine it in emerald green... it totally changes. However, I do have to say the fit and cut of the pants were perfect.

Regina King in Alberta Ferreti Limited Edition


How do we have to kill to have this body? Seriously. With that body, she took care of the rest: make it shine, literally, with a dress that hugs her curves and has a beautiful pink color that goes perfectly with her skin. Some might have commented that the sparkle was too much, but when else, if not a red carpet are you suppossed to wear something sparkly? Please! 

Catherine Zeta Jones in Elie Saab Haute Couture


You know us, give us a jewel color and you have our hearts. And that's how Catrherine Zeta-Jones made us fall for her dress, that and a stylist that takes all the ovation for making the red carpet look be even better than the runway one, getting rid of the sleeves that would've been too much for Catherine's height. The draping at the front of the dress is such an intricate work, and the slit at the side is enough, not too high. Bravo, Catherine!

Rosamund Pike in Givenchy Haute Couture 

A VERY interesting dress that, being black, we could've easily obverlooked if it wasn't for the jacket, the perfect touch to make this look unforgettable. The fit is flawless and the cutouts of the top play with that sexy yet elegant feeling that black embodies so well, and also goes perfectly with Rosamund's sophisticated allure. 

Octavia Spencer in Christian Siriano

Always willing to take risks, Octavia took a step back from her almost usual Tadashi Shoji twear a dress from Christian Siriano, who loves to dress different women and bodies. The result is something we can't but admire: a dress that is interesting for its texture and neckline, and a skirt that challenges that 'rule' of plus size women avoiding A-line skirt. Here, instead of adding volume, the silhouette balances her figure. Gorgeous.

Worst Dressed
Kristin Cavalieri in Amen

When Jennifer Lopez saw her (we assume sitting on a couch cuddling with A-Rod because she decided to pass on the carpet this year) she started yelling because she knew who broke into her closet and stole her dress. We know everything, Kristin, those sloppy sleeves rat you out.

Anne Hathaway in Elie Saab 

She let Cat Woman take over and everything went down hill from there. And let me tell you that if this is a sort of new direction for Elie Saab, I´m not buying it. It's a shame because she looks so happy wearing that hideous thing. 

Gina Rodriguez in Reem Acra

This dress looks so, so cheap that I'm sure the rhinestones from the front are to stick to it with superglue. I swear to God. And oh, let's not even mention the fact that she thought the skirt was appropriate to dance. Please.. 

Debra Messing in Pamela Rolland

Welcome to a new episode of Frankendress, starring Debra Messing as the woman who was swalloed by a thousand feathers. This dress has a cape, feathers, crystals, mesh accents... like Melissa said, all it is missing is a LED light and an antena.

Lucy Liu in Galia Lahav

The dress itself is not unbeareable, but that 'cape', that looks more like a rejected piece of tulle from the atelier, ruined it all. Maybe it was too cold and she needed a blanket?

Caitriona Balfe in Moschino
Jeremy Scott is not our favorite guy... precisely because of things like this. A weird velvet skirt with the wrong lenght...crowned with heavy shoes and bobby pins on her head. Is there really someone that could look and say: you look gorgeous? Really?

Janelle Monae in Chanel 

You have no idea how much this hurts. We have always said Janelle Monae can pull off anything, but this is so ugly not even her can make it work. The dress is from the Chanel Pre-Fall 2019 collection, inspired by Egypt, but it doesn't have ONE thing we would approve: the neck looks like an biblical lettuce, and that thing on her head reminds us how the egyptians saw the aliens. The only good thing is the make-up, but sadly is not enough.

Judy Greer in Alberta Ferreti
"I knosw my moral compass is not always pointing North, but if I see something wrong is because it is..." Judy Greer should've known better and listened to Casey, her alter ego in 27 Dresses, before wearing this sad attempt of a tuxedo and crowned it with the hairdo I wear when I haven't washed my hair in four days. 

Special Mentions

Saoirse Ronan in Gucci 


Meli thought it was boring, but I thought it was edgy and beautiful. The resource of the little chains is not new, it is actually very similar to the one Zuleyka Rivera wore in 2006 when she won Miss Universe, just without the slit which is precisely what elevates the look of the Lady Bird actress. I like the 'wet hair' look with the hair parted on the side and also the spectacular Chopard earrings. I think I should've fought Meli on this one.


Claire Foy in Miu Miu 
I loved the Old Hollywood idea, with the 30's inspired hair and all, but Melissa says the color wasn't for her (picture it in red, ot totally changes, she said). To me, yellow is perfect for her skin tone and I loved the redish tone of the lips that was dark enough to not clash with the yellow.

Lupita Nyong'o in Calvin Klein by Appointment

She's here because there is no more space in the best dressed list, but as usual, Lupita killed it. A great color, details and proportions on the dress that make everything a winner look. If we'd had to choose a detail that we didn't like, we'd have to say is the blue mascara, because this is not 2005 nor Teen Vogue, Lupita, please. 

Lady Gaga in Valentino Haute Couture

First things first: that 'runway' look that is going around comparing it to this one is not the one Gaga is really wearing. That being said, this is the dress of someone who knows all eyes will be on her (even if she doesn't deserve to win anything beyong the Original Song). It's really unbelievable that we have to clarify this but here it goes: we never said nor thought that Jamie Lee Curtis looks 'old' with that hair color. While tweeting the red carpet we said we didn't like her hair and people freaked out saying we were age-shaming her, that if it was a guy we wouldn't say the same. Well, first of all, you don't know that, and second, what we meant to say is that the color looked very fake. Or I meant to say that, because Meli said what bother hair was the hairstyle, not the color. But yes, she is on this list because of her hair... that in our opinion does not go with the dress at all. So you can hate us, but there's that... 

Sandra Oh in Versace

The hostess of the night had to look the part and she did... but she is on this list because you know us: a dress does not only have to be beautiful, it also has to be memorable, and honestly I'm not going to remember this next week.
